Requirements


  • open to all external applicants from outside the Civil Service
  • ● Theoretical and practical knowledge and expertise of fungal research
  • ● Good experience in aseptic microbiology techniques and working in containment level 2
  • ● Previous experience within an industrial microbiology laboratory
  • ● Understanding and knowledge of ISO and ASTM standards
  • ● A good knowledge of cell culture and maintenance would be highly advantageous
  • ● Analysing and evaluating techniques and processes
  • ● Providing specialist expertise as well as troubleshooting skills
  • ● A PhD or 4+ years industry experience in microbiology or related discipline
  • ● Analysing samples, adhering to controlled methods and procedures while being able to develop in-house protocols in line with the relevant ISO/ASTM standards to aid the high volume of sample screening
  • education: PhD or MSc in Microbiology, Biotechnology, or a related field
  • leadership: Proven track record of leading and managing teams within a laboratory or production environment
  • technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of microbial fermentation processes, DNA fingerprinting, and yeast strain analysis
  • regulatory Knowledge: Experience with HACCP and quality management systems
  • skills: Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • experience: 5+ years of experience in microbial fermentation, yeast production, or related fields. Previous experience in the brewing, fermentation, or food industries is preferred
  • microbiology: 1 year
  • degree in Microbiology
  • experience in a microbiology laboratory, preferably in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or aseptic manufacturing environment
  • knowledge of GMP, regulatory requirements, and microbiological testing techniques

Responsibility


  • contributing to the clinical infection service for OPAT
  • microbiology Lead for TB services at UCLH with contribution to weekly NCL South Hub TB MDT
  • lead for oversight and development of the Moorfields’ microbiology service
  • contributing to the Consultant general clinical microbiology service through leading on the daily bacteraemia / complex case meeting
  • contributing to a number of multidisciplinary team meetings in combination with infectious diseases colleagues
  • to undertake a range of diagnostic assays and techniques as required, meeting the needs of UK-PHRST service provision
  • undertake general laboratory duties including disposal of waste, equipment maintenance, stock control and ensuring a safe working environment
  • undergo any training requirements as required for the post
  • to be responsible for, lead and manage the FW&E Microbiology service
  • to comply with all UKHSA policy and procedures
  • provide expert scientific leadership and be responsible for the strategic development and operational service delivery for FW&E Microbiology
  • to take a leading role in the delivery of the laboratory’s diagnostic activities. To provide quality feedback on laboratory performance with regular communications via emails and reports
  • to perform any other duties required by the line manager commensurate with grade
  • prioritise, co-ordinate and organise specialist investigations and supervise the workload of a team of staff
  • operate the QC Microbiology Laboratory following safety guidelines and cGMP standards set by the client
  • maintain cleanliness in the laboratories
  • perform laboratory administrations, archiving of documentation
  • conduct microbiological testing on samples to ensure they meet specified standards
  • document quality records like non-conformances, and develop corrective and preventive actions and change controls when necessary
  • coordinate with external testing laboratories for timely and accurate testing
