Requirements


  • previous experience working with animals in a professional setting is preferred
  • knowledge of basic animal care practices and procedures
  • familiarity with veterinary terminology and medical treatments is a plus
  • strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
  • excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • comfortable with heavy lifting as some animals may require assistance

  • theoretical and practical training for working in an in-vivo setting

  • significant experience of working in an animal-based environment achieving the highest level of animal welfare and maintaining staff safety
  • detailed knowledge of the Animals Act 1986
  • working within a Quality system environment and experience of working to SOPs, COPs, RAs etc

  • able to communicate effectively with peers, managers and scientists, both verbally and written formats
  • able to prioritise own and others work
  • IAT level 2 qualification or NVQ level 2 in animal care/husbandry or equivalent level of qualification or 2 years experience working with laboratory animals

  • willingness to undergo vaccinations as determined by project work

Responsibility

  • the role holder will also support the Biosciences Manager and Deputy Biofacility Managers in the daily coordination and supervision of technicians including daily supervision and oversight of the team carrying out daily care routines, training and assessment of new and existing staff, and supporting staff reviews
  • general animal husbandry and maintenance of transgenic/immunocompromised mouse breeding programmes and species housed within the facility
  • help identify and propose improvements to experimental procedures advising on practical opportunities to implement the 3R’s
  • perform daily tasks related to the care and well-being of animals, including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring their health
  • administer medications and treatments as directed by veterinarians or supervisors
  • assist with handling and restraining animals during examinations or procedures
  • maintain accurate records of animal health, behavior, and any treatments or observations
  • clean and sanitize animal enclosures, equipment, and work areas to maintain a safe and healthy environment
  • provide enrichment activities to promote mental stimulation and socialization for animals
  • assist with the transportation of animals within the facility
