Requirements


  • proven experience successfully commissioning and/or taking books through the publishing process
  • strong prior experience in successfully acquiring and publishing best-selling sci-fi and fantasy titles. These could be Young Adult titles
  • ability to work effectively under pressure while keeping to schedule
  • A commercial mindset with the ability to think strategically about potential acquisitions
  • A good honours degree in engineering, materials science, a physical sciences subject, or related subject
  • STM book publishing experience
  • previous experience of developing and working with Editorial Boards

  • you will be a passionate reader of crime and thrillers with exceptional taste and strong commercial acumen
  • A deep understanding of digital book publishing and the commercial fiction market, and an ability to spot trends
  • solid track record of acquiring and successfully publishing commercial fiction and building author brands in the digital space
  • impeccable communication skills and an ability to forge strong, long-lasting relationships with authors, agents, internal teams and freelancers alike
  • strong business judgement, and an ability to use data to inform decisions and measure results
  • solid negotiations skills
  • excellent and creative editor, proofreader and copywriter, with a great eye for commercial packaging
  • excellent organisation skills, and the ability to successfully manage a busy list to tight deadlines
  • A proven ability to continuously insist on high standards and deliver best-In-class publishing experiences for authors
  • A biomedical background to at least BSc level
  • journals publishing experience in an editorial role, ideally in a related field to Immuno-Oncology

Responsibility

  • working closely with Sales and Marketing teams to support the disseminating of key and timely information to secure products' reach to market
  • generating books for publishing in part through being on top of trends and proactively seeking out new opportunities
  • acquire and publish a set number of titles annually across fantasy and science fiction
  • managing the complete publishing cycle of your books, liaising with key departments across the business, authors, agents and other external partners
  • demonstrate commercial acumen by identifying opportunities for growth across the list, including staying informed about market trends and competitor activities
  • working with the Publishing Director on a small number of authors
  • build and maintain strong relationships with authors and agents for future acquisitions
  • networking to create and maintain strong relationships with authors, agents and other partners in the UK and internationally
  • evaluate the viability and profitability of potential acquisitions and handle negotiations
  • being a strong team player and an advocate for your books and the Viking list
  • oversee the internal book process, including editing, scheduling, and cover design, liaising with Editorial Management, Production, and Text Design
  • actively engaging with Penguin Random House’s diversity and inclusion goals
  • maintain a strong working relationship with Del Rey US on shared authors and future acquisitions
  • undertake any other duties and projects at the request of the line manager
  • acquire and publish commercial fiction books and help build author brands
  • develop and maintain strong relationships with authors, literary agents and industry contacts
  • actively contribute to the acquisition and editorial strategy of the imprint
  • work closely with the Embla Books team to continuously raise the bar and deliver a best-in-class publishing experience for our authors
  • working with the Publisher and Editorial Director on the publication of existing Zaffre Fiction authors – from author care and administrative duties to editing, project-managing and desk-editing – including taking sole responsibility for a number of titles
