Responsibility
- assembling mechanical systems to engineering drawings
- installing mechanical systems and assemblies on beamlines and instruments in a scientific environment
- using engineering drawings to assemble and install mechanical and electrical equipment

- the maintenance and repair of these installed systems, including hydraulics, pneumatics and mechatronics
- off-line preparation, maintenance and testing of soft matter sample environment equipment
- managing an installation plan and processes to meet project requirements
- ensure the running of the Muon experiments and the liquid helium system for the super conducting magnet
- installation and commissioning of sample environment equipment on neutron instruments
- providing technical leadership in a specific technical area relevant to ISIS
- managing testing and commissioning plans
- work as a prominent part of a team within future projects and act as the main contact for muon work
- providing any necessary management and supervision of contract staff
- in-situ fault-finding and efficient provision of solutions
- working with engineers, scientists and visiting users of our facility on finding solutions to mechanical challenges and problems
- ensuring safe and efficient operation of relevant plant and services
- monitor and maintain the intermediate target systems, leading installations and upgrades as required
- help develop soft matter sample environment equipment for future demands
- working safely and ensure the safety of others in a scientific and engineering environment
- carry out training and mentoring of less experienced staff and in appropriate fitting, machining, and manufacturing techniques
- contribute operational expertise to intermediate target projects, the Riken redevelopment, and Muon beamlines
- comprehensive experimental support, including round-the-clock trouble shooting/ fault finding and repair of equipment. Providing on-call cover during user program
- planning of maintenance and shutdown activities
- assemble complex mechanical systems to engineering drawings
- installation of mechanical systems and assemblies on beamlines and instruments in a scientific environment
- liaison with in-house and visiting scientists and engineers on experimental requirements and the provision of solutions to their experimental needs
- producing high quality machining work to close tolerances working to sketches, engineering drawings and verbal instructions as appropriate
- the ISIS facility runs five continuous 5-week-long cycles each year so a flexible approach to working is crucial to meet our support role requirements
Requirements
- experience of following health and safety legislation in the workplace
- able to interpret data and produce written documents and reports
- proven experience of forward thinking / and problem solving

- the post holder will have a rounded practical mechanical engineering background
- technical assembly skills And Experience of testing
- also having the knowledge of the properties of materials is desirable
- STFC’s ISIS Neutron and Muon facility is a leading centre of material science excellence
- A good knowledge of the properties of materials and knowledge and experience of mechanical assembly and test of equipment
- ability to independently work on projects but equally be able to work as part of a team
- experience working in a laboratory environment and working with engineering drawings
- the facility performs cutting edge research into the structure and properties of materials at an atomic and molecular level
- experience of gas systems, furnaces and vacuum systems would be useful but not essential as training will be given
- experience of vacuum and/or gas systems
- it is the most productive research centre of its type in the world
- each year we welcome around 2000 visiting scientists who complete over 1000 experiments
- you will have a well-rounded practical mechanical engineering background, with a good knowledge of vacuum systems, leak testing, hydraulic systems and associated safety requirements
- they also would be expected to demonstrate leadership and management skills and have the ability to effectively manage contractors and staff
- excellent interpersonal and team working skills are essential, as is the ability to engage effectively on technical issues with staff and facility users at all levels
