- A PhD in Earth System Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related discipline
- A proven track record of scientific excellence in land surface modelling and hydrology
- A proven track record of successful project applications, as well as for the coordination of scientific projects
- experience in supervision and mentoring of team members
- experience to push model developments into operational use and the maintenance of an operational product would be an advantage
Responsibility
- enhance developments to represent hydrology and the water and carbon cycles within Earth system modelling
- provide line-management, develop one and four-year plans, coordinate the work, and establish technical advice and guidance to the Land Modelling Team
- take responsibility for the Land Modelling Team at ECMWF during meetings and committees
- advise senior management at ECMWF about challenges and opportunities in Land modelling
- identify training needs inside the team and realise ECMWF Training Course where needed
- build a research vision for the Team and coordinate short, medium and long-term research and developments toward better Numerical Weather Predictions across all forecast lead times , as well as for climate simulations and reanalysis
- maintain and develop links to the wider science community, for example in the context of the open-source ecLand model developed within the Team
- coordinate the contributions to external projects and attract new project money where useful to achieve the research vision of the team
