After five years of service (99.7% attendance, always on time), I was fired for looking at my phone at the end of my shift.
They dragged me through 6 meetings with 8 different managers, analyzing CCTV repeatedly. The upstairs operations manager (bitter and vindictive) decided "trust could not be mended."
A source confirmed the truth: all firing decisions have been centralized to him. He is using disciplinary dismissals to cut staff during a work drought because it is cheaper than paying the redundancies expected later this year.

Now, I know there will be people who say "too bad, you broke health and safety" — but let me tell you: over the last 5 years, ASDA have colonised my phone with vital information and messages. We are actually required to bring our phone and use it — for shift management and even time management. Three apps are added that are vital for ASDA staff, and they send phone messages regularly to tell us important information for that shift. When you are caught, they ASSUME you regularly use it. I feel unlucky because I was not a habitual user of the phone.

Fortunately, I scored a better job with a better employer the next day and don't feel anything has been lost.

Advice to Senior Management:
Stop hiding behind "loss of trust" to avoid paying redundancy. Treat long-serving staff with the respect they earned. A phone check at the end of a shift should not end a five-year career to save a few pounds. And stop forcing staff to install apps on personal phones if you are then going to fire them for touching those same phones.
To the managers upstairs- the seniors who break health and safety often.. all ye hypocrits!! You miserable sad faced people- why share your gloom over impotency wth everyone. So you hate life and need for a poker face.. don't despise the staff they do their best!

I took on a seasonal night duty job with ASDA. They are very modern in their approach as all training and communications are via an app - Workday. This is great, you constantly update skills and knowledge through the app. The induction is completed through the app. There may not be time given to complete all the training they require as the shift is usually busy, I completed a number of the trainings in my own time from home, therefore never got paid for the work i did. It was nearly impossible to do these while on the night shifts as the shifts were usually very busy from 10pm through to 6am. I only worked 2 days per week. But it seems a great way to keep staff updated just need to ensure it’s incorporated into the shift.
Payslips, P60 etc are also managed through their app. That is great. While you are employed you have access to these at all times. I would advice downloading these though as you no longer have access to these once you leave the company. That is not an issue but my biggest issue is that I left on 31st March, the account was closed down very quickly and it is now July 3rd and i have still not received my final payslip but more importantly my P45 - a legal requirement for companies to provide for their former staff. I have now sent 4 emails to [email protected] and recently to the workday email address. I have received no response from either email addresses acknowledging my email nor any P45. I find this lack of support for staff and former staff to be atrocious. In terms of a supporting company that advertises to staff in the staff areas that they are an inclusive company, supporting staff and encouraging staff it would appear to be lip service only. I have not found them to be inclusive or supportive in any way.
