My son and I had such a wonderful afternoon on Eigg with Jon and Kat. We opted for the bushcraft experience. Just from talking to Jon who was so flexible and helpful with setting up the day, I thought it would be a good experience, but didn’t think we would learn quite so much and do so much. Archery, axe throwing and fire lighting were included in a peaceful forest setting. Kat is an amazing instructor - precise and thorough, but also really relaxed and encouraging - we had great fun with her. We learned things about fire lighting that I had never known. This couple really are living off grid and understand both the demands and the peace of it. It was clear that many of the things we learned about were an integral to their own lives, not just activities for tourists to enjoy. We had great conversations around the fire about life on Eigg and the balance of eco systems around the islands. It was clear these two people are really enjoying their life but also have a deep understanding about what is happening and want to do something about lost skills and traditions and show people a way of life that I, for one, believe feeds our natural needs far more than modern life. It is great that they have already hosted many local schoolchildren and I hope more people have a chance to hear what they have to say. Also loved the tea, marshmallow s’mores and laughs around the fire - thanks Kat! We wish we had been able to stay longer (ferry times constrained us). But we will go back to try snorkelling and paddle boarding from this dedicated, authentic and inspiring couple. Sam and Tris xx
