Responsibility
the trading arm of the Students’ Union comprises the SU Shop and the SU Bar. The outlets serve the students and staff of the university, but have a wider audience which encompasses hospital staff and visitors
the outlets operate on a commercial, profit-generating basis, but all surpluses are retained by the SU to support student welfare and activities
since the shop re-opened post pandemic, profit generating targets have been ambitious, and the shop manager role is key to help maintaining progress towards achieving this
the SU Shop is located on the ground floor of Hunter Wing in the main foyer, and stocks a wide variety of stationery, confectionery, clothing, medical equipment, drinks, sandwiches, snacks and convenience foods
we expect the appointed individual to provide leadership and effective management for the shop, and who will report directly to the Students’ Union chief operating officer
the manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of the shop, dealing with both customers and suppliers. The additional duties include supervising the assistant manager, shop supervisors and student staff
dealing with complaints
allocating and delegating tasks for the day e.g. restocking shelves and organising the stock room and ensuring adequate cover over the lunch period
Requirements
previous and relevant retail and managerial experience in a fast-paced environment
experience of managing and leading in a retail setting
extensive experience of supervising and managing staff
strong customer service/sales skills
ability to deal with difficult customers
financial skills to enable development of secure and effective cash handling and fiscal functions within the shop
experience of security and quality assurance processes in a retail context
accurate cash handling skills
