Responsibility

  • the team at Birch Farm are seeking an Assistant Gardener to assist with growing of produce
  • you will be involved in all aspects of horticultural production and maintenance on the farm and other gardens within the business
  • birch Farm is an agroecology farm, using organic and natural farming principles along with a strong emphasis on agroforestry
  • learn to identify crops
  • help to establish and maintain productive growing sites
  • communicate with other members of the farm team to make sure all jobs are completed quickly and effectively
  • interact with visitors to the farm in a positive manner
  • deliver culinary and ornamental crops in a timely fashion

Requirements

  • A keen interest in horticulture
  • clear written and verbal communication skills
  • willingness to work well with others while experimenting with new growing ideas
  • some experience is required, including growing vegetables from seed, sewing, planting and an understanding of plant care
  • good communication skills are needed. Interacting with other members of staff and with the public will necessarily form a part of the role
  • you must have a good level of fitness to cope with the physical demands of the role and be able to finish set tasks in a timely and efficient manner
  • you will be expected to work in all weather conditions. Some flexibility is needed for working longer hours on occasion along with rotational weekend cover
  • applicants must be willing to adapt and trial alternative methods while also having the opportunity to contribute to ideas to help the farm form a unique style of growing
