Responsibility
- carry out daily feeding, watering, cleaning and general care of laboratory animals
- husbandry and animal care of rodents, ensuring the highest levels of animal welfare and culture of care at all times

- make observations, keep accurate records and input data into computer programmes
- perform cleaning and sterilisation of animal cages and equipment by operating large washers, autoclaves and fumigation/decontamination chambers
- collection and processing of samples and tissue
- cleaning and changing cage bases to ensure suitable environments for the animals
- conduct surgical and non-surgical procedures
- take a hands-on role to support research groups with animal care
- make observations, keep accurate records, and input data into computer programmes
- medical examinations
- assist with experimental procedures as and when required by users e.g. MRI, Passage work, injections, weighing animals
- complete daily monitoring and reporting of the animal unit environment including temperatures, and the security and suitability of animal housing
- after training, undertake simple non-regulated and regulated procedures and techniques, including Schedule 1
- preparation of procedure rooms/operating theatres and sterilisation of equipment
- recording and handling of experimental data - paper and electronic - and ensuring compliance with Home Office Regulations
- ensure the animals have access to food, water and environmental enrichment
- make observations and keep accurate records along with capturing data as required
- performing regulated procedures, as per facility users requirements
- after training, undertake simple non-regulated and regulated procedures and techniques, including schedule 1
- maintain detailed, accurate records regarding breeding, health, welfare and environmental checks
- maintain animal welfare, animal barrier status and hygiene standards by following standard operating procedures
- contribute towards the general cleaning and upkeep of the facility and monitor and record environmental conditions in specific areas as required
- be involved in surgery support and post-operative care of rodents
- disposal of waste material, special waste and animal carcases, in a compliant and safe manner
- accurate and timely record keeping
- daily care and maintenance of the research unit
- keep up to date with developments in animal technology, recommend and develop procedures
- keeping accurate records and inputting data onto computer systems
- use equipment in a safe and appropriate manner
- adhere to Home Office guidelines and the Animal Scientific Procedures Act 1986
- responsible for the weaning of all mice and blood/DNA collection for genotyping as instructed
- notify the team leader regarding any suspected or recorded problems in relation to animal welfare or the unit environment
- following SOP’s and Health and Safety procedures
- be accountable to NACWO and NVS regarding facility audits, animal care and direction of licence holders
- carry out basic equipment maintenance
- interact with research scientists and other animal technicians
- entering data and maintaining the database in accordance with the Home Office codes of practice and running appropriate reports
- train other staff in licensed and non-licensed techniques
- communicating with researchers, experimental staff and facility team mates
- assist with other duties and responsibilities as required
- to follow all policies, work instructions, operating procedures and quality documents
- commit to the rota for weekend and bank holiday work
- maintain and purchase consumables and equipment
- driving University vehicles for transporting animals and consumables as required
- liaise closely with scientific staff, whose animals you are responsible for
- contribute towards cleaning and upkeep of the facilities
- ensuring best standards of animal welfare and researchers’ requirements are met

- previous experience working with animals in a laboratory environment
- experience of working in a rodent BSU facility
- you must have practical experience, having cared for animals in a work or voluntary capacity
- experience working with laboratory rodents
- experience in routine animal husbandry and animal handling
- practical experience caring for animals in a work or voluntary capacity is essential, along with an eye for detail
- natural empathy towards animals and a passion for animal care and welfare
- competency in dosing routes and sample collection in multiple species
