• responsible for the safe planning, control and execution of the lifting operation and producing the safe system of work
• ensure that all work equipment has been serviced, maintained and where appropriate, examined, tested, calibrated, tagged and suitable records maintained
• look for and suggest ways of eliminating hazards
• ensure that all work is undertaken in accordance with any agreed safe systems of work such as lifting plans, permits to work, method statements, risk assessments, COSHH assessments, operating procedures and safety briefings
• consult and communicate with the workforce on H&S matters and seek to gain participation and cooperation of the workforce
• ensure that new employees, particularly labourers, improvers and young workers are shown the correct method of working and all safety precautions are followed
